While it can often be hard to bridge the gap between the public and private sectors, it's such an important step to take. Through a partnership with Cottonwood Business Consulting, you can encourage your residents to shop local and improve your city's Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) Program, among many other benefits. If you asked anyone in Salt Lake County what their favorite areas are for shopping and dining, you'd probably get similar answers; areas like the Marmalade District, 9th and 9th, and Sugarhouse have set themselves apart from the rest by containing a variety of small, locally owned businesses that offer great products and tasty food. While residents may like that there's a Costco or a Starbucks right down the street from their house, they ultimately pick an area to live and play in based off of how that area makes them feel; the more charming and unique, the more desirable the area. Tourists often seek out the same types of businesses, hoping to get a taste of the "local" experience while visiting an area that's new to them. While businesses like auto malls and retail warehouses are big sales tax generators, they are rarely the deciding factor in what makes people move to or visit a city.
